Shennongjia – UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site

Shennongjia (Shennongjia National Park) in western Hubei Province, is said to be where Shennong (Yan Emperor), one of the two ancestors of Chinese people, tasted various herbs and thus facilitated traditional Chinese medicine. Renowned globally, this park has received four designations including World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO, World Biosphere Reserve, Global Geopark, and Wetland of International Importance. It's the world's only well-preserved virgin forest area in the middle latitudes. Because of its terrific natural scenery, outstanding biodiversity, and the famous myth of wild man said to be spotted here, it attracts numerous tourists every year.

Why Visit Shennongjia

Shennongjia National Park is in the watershed between the Yangtze River and the Han River. Spanning about 3,253 square kilometers, it boasts a virgin forest coverage up to over 91.2%. It also features wetlands, lakes, gorges, rainfalls, streams, etc. This park is a treasure trove of diverse flora and fauna, providing habitat for rare plants and many endangered animal species, such as Chinese giant salamanders, golden snub-nosed monkeys, etc. Thus, Shennongjia is also reputed as "Species Gene Bank on Earth" and "Biological Paradise". Besides, Shennongjia is a world-class museum of geological changes, showcasing various stratigraphic units, geological chronologies and erosion relics from the Precambrian, Paleozoic, Mesozoic eras, etc. The integrity, authenticity, non-renewability and non-replicability of its natural resources and its ecosystem are rare in the world.

Criterion (x): Hubei Shennongjia's unique terrain and climate have been relatively little affected by glaciation and thus create a haven for numerous rare, endangered and endemic species, as well as many of the world's deciduous woody species. The mountainous terrain also contains critical habitat for a range of flagship animal species. Internationally, Shennongjia holds a special place for the study of plant systematics and horticultural science.
