History of the Yangtze River

Many rivers and mountains come out with the earth's crust changes. Yangtze River is shaped in the same way during the Jurassic Period. Later the human activity in the area was found in 2 million years ago of Old Stone Age, proved by human fossils dig out in this area.

In the Spring and Autumn Period, there were chaos and different kingdoms settled in different area with their tribes and Yangtze River was the boundary. The Ba tribes lived in the western part of the river, which is the Sichuan province now; The Chu was lived in the central part of river, where are the Hubei, Jiangxi, Anhui provinces; Wu and Yue people were located in the eastern part of the river, now refer to Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai areas. During that time, Yangtze River witnessed many fierce battles.

In order to overcome the difficulty to cross the river, people in Ming Dynasty built bridge in Nanjing, a city along the Yangtze, which starts a new era in Yangtze River’s history.

Since then, Yangtze River as the vital transportation line to connect and change different goods between cities, which largely improved the economy of the southern coastal cities. But the transit has not been easy as the river has some dangerous reaches, rocks and wildly fluctuating water levels.

Today, as the construction of Three Gorges Dam, ships in Yangtze River are much safer and the load capacities have much improvement. At the same time, the tourism of Yangtze River is attracting more tourists from home and aboard to cruise Yangtze by its historical sites and nature sceneries.
